"Northern Odyssey: Mar
Theophilus Training College's Exploration of India's Heritage"
From
March 16 to March 22, 2024, the second-year students of Mar Theophilus Training
College embarked on an enriching journey to explore the historical and cultural
landmarks of Northern India. The tour, meticulously coordinated by
Dr.Nandhaine, Dr. Bindu B, and Dr. Jiji Kurian, provided a perfect blend of
education and adventure.
Our
journey commenced from Trivandrum Central Railway Station aboard the Hazrat
Nizamuddin SF train, marking the beginning of a seven-day journey that would
take us through the majestic city of Agra and the bustling metropolis of Delhi.
The two-day train journey was filled with camaraderie, scenic views, and shared
stories. We bonded over card games, lively discussions, and delicious meals,
all while eagerly anticipating the adventures ahead.
We
arrived in Agra on the third day, greeted by the morning sun and the bustling
city. Our first destination was the iconic Taj Mahal. The sight of this
magnificent marble structure left us in awe. We explored the grounds, marvelling
at its intricate carvings, symmetry, and historical significance. Next, we
visited the Agra Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The fort's red sandstone
walls and majestic palaces gave us a glimpse into the grandeur of the Mughal
era. We felt the echoes of history. From Agra, we travelled to Delhi and checked
into our hotel, excited for the wonders that awaited us the next day.
Our
fourth day began with a hearty breakfast. Our first stop was the Qutub Minar, a
striking example of Indo-Islamic architecture. The towering minaret captivated
us with its detailed carvings and historical significance. We then visited the
Lotus Temple, a serene haven resembling a lotus flower. The peaceful ambiance
allowed us a few moments of quiet reflection.Next, we went to Raj Ghat, the memorial
of Mahatma Gandhi. The simplicity of the black marble platform and the
surrounding greenery was a poignant reminder of Gandhi's legacy. We also paid
our respects at the memorials of Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi. The day's
exploration continued with a visit to the Red Fort, a symbol of India's rich
past. Wandering through its sprawling complex, we felt the tales of emperors
and their courts come alive. We concluded the day with a shopping spree at
Sarojini Market, indulging in local handicrafts and souvenirs before returning
to our hotel.
Our
final day in Delhi began with a bittersweet feeling. After breakfast, we
visited Humayun's Tomb, often referred to as the precursor to the Taj Mahal.
The symmetrical gardens and the grandeur of the tomb were awe-inspiring.Next,
we toured Rashtrapati Bhavan, the official residence of the President of India.
The beautifully maintained Mughal Gardens welcomed us with vibrant colours and
fragrances. Our historical tour continued with visits to the Nehru Museum, the Indira
Gandhi Memorial Museum, and the PradhanmantriSangrahalaya. Each museum offered
a rich tapestry of India's modern history. We ended our Delhi adventure with a
visit to India Gate, the iconic war memorial. The towering arch, inscribed with
the names of soldiers, evoked a sense of pride and gratitude.
With
hearts full of memories, we made our way to New Delhi Railway Station to board
the Kerala Express for our return journey. The two days spent on the train were
a perfect blend of relaxation and reflection. We shared our favourite moments,
laughed over funny incidents, and cherished the strengthened friendships. We
arrived back in Trivandrum around midnight on March 22, 2024. As we
disembarked, tired yet exhilarated, we knew that this journey had been more
than just a tour; it had been an enriching journey through time, culture, and
history.
